Let Food be Thy Medicine
Living where I have had the privilege of living for the past eight years, on the westside of Los Angeles, there is absolutely no shortage of access to some of the freshest foods year-round, always in-season and almost every day of the week. What a blissful blessing!
I recognize that this is not the case everywhere in the world though. Thankfully, I have been able to travel around the states and see for my own eyes just how inaccessible real, fresh foods can be at times, which has really allowed me to have gratitude for where I live. As the well-known Greek physician Hippocrates said, “Let food be thy medicine, and let medicine be thy food.”
Our bodies are our temples, and for myself, one of the most important ways that I tend to my temple is through the consumption of real organic from-the-earth foods. I am talking about fruits, vegetables, plants, and wild-to-table meats. The potency of the foods that we eat are byproducts of the ‘foods’ they eat. In other words, the quality of the soil and land in which they are grown, raised, and digest. It comes down to the soil.
So, when I am strolling through the farmers market, I am picking up nothing but organically grown produce. Some might believe that it does not make a difference, conventionally and chemically raised versus organically raised, and that is fine by me. We are all entitled to our own beliefs and have the choice to put into our bodies what we choose. I simply am choosing to not put into my body foods that have been sprayed by toxic chemicals, on unhealthy soil, for the sake of quantity and not quality. That is not the energy I want to be putting into my temple. For more information on this topic, and more I highly suggest the book by Michael Pollan, “In Defense of Food.”
There is no doubt in my mind that the earth naturally provides the nutrients we need every season, year in and year out. She always provides what we need, when we need it, with consistency and without hesitation. So what do you do if you live somewhere that does not always have access to the freshest foods year round? That is a great question.
Learning how to grow your own food is one of the most powerful and liberating practices we can do as humans. It is how we evolved. There were no grocery stores and food delivery systems around hundreds of years or even decades ago. Though I must say, finding a solid food delivery system can be a great solution for some. For myself, wherever I choose to live in the future is going to be strongly influenced by the quality of the elements: earth (soil), water, air (quality). Chi, prana, life-force, is everything! I want to spend my time where Chi is naturally most abundant because I believe that the quality of one’s life depends very much on the quality of the elements we surround ourselves in.
Spending time cooking is another practice I would highly recommend. Preparing, washing, chopping, lathering, steaming, boiling, the list goes on. There is something really special about getting your (clean and just washed) hands on and involved with the preparation of your food. Make the time, make an effort, make it a practice, love-on your food. Afterall, it is the energy that fuels our bodies and minds throughout the day. When we invest time, effort, and energy in anything that we do it is always reciprocated whether we know it or not, whether we believe it or not. Food is medicine, and medicine is food. Wishing you many blessings on your food journey!
