Help Alleviate Extreme Poverty

The Life You Can Save’s recommended charities address a wide variety of cause areas, but all help deliver services to people living in extreme poverty that are high-impact and life-changing, often at a very low cost. For example, a US$50 donation could help Seva Foundation provide one adult with sight-restoring cataract surgery, or help Evidence Action provide safe drinking water to 39 people for one year, or help Against Malaria Foundation purchase and distribute 25 insecticide-treated bednets in malaria-stricken areas, each of which could protect two people for up to three years.

The Life You Can Save is a non-profit organization that connects donors with high-impact charities and promotes the idea of effective giving through free resources such as its founder Peter Singer’s book The Life You Can Save. In this foundational book of the effective giving movement, Australian moral philosopher Peter Singer argues that not all charities are equal, that some charities can be hundreds or even thousands of times more impactful than others, and that we have a moral imperative to support charities that do the most good. Professor Singer founded The Life You Can Save in 2013 to popularize the idea of effective giving he developed in his research and inspire more people to make smart, fulfilling giving decisions. In 2019, the organization purchased the publishing rights to Professor Singer’s book and now distributes thousands of digital and physical copies annually for free.

In addition to spreading the idea of effective giving through Professor Singer’s book, The Life You Can Save uses a robust evaluation framework to identify and recommend a list of effective charities whose high-impact, data-based interventions help lift people out of extreme poverty. Importantly, The Life You Can Save’s evaluation framework adopts a multidimensional approach to poverty, which examines the deprivations that poverty creates across the dimensions of health, education, and living standards.

In the decade since its founding, The Life You Can Save has helped inspire and process over US$100 million in donations to its recommended charities—all at no cost to either its charities or donors—through managed cause funds like its Maximize Your Impact Fund, which empowers donors to support the most time-sensitive, impactful interventions, and free online resources like its Impact Calculator, which helps donors visualize the real-world impact their donations will have.
